UKEB Workshops: Explore accounting for intangibles

02 June 2026

Is better accounting for intangibles possible?

The UKEB has hosted four online workshops over the past week, using practical case studies on R&D, training costs, carbon credits and data. These sessions have explored how different intangible-related transactions are understood and how they could be accounted for.

Traditional accounting boundaries are increasingly being tested, as value creation shifts from easily accountable outputs from machines and factories towards more intangible outputs from people, innovation, data and sustainability.

Participants included:

  • Preparers and users of financial information
  • Advisors and practitioners
  • Academics and policymakers

Participants had the opportunity to share their perspectives on:

  • Underlying economics of different types of intangibles
  • Recognition, measurement, and disclosure challenges
  • Key tensions and trade‑offs within existing accounting frameworks

Feedback from stakeholders will inform the UKEB’s ongoing research project on intangibles. The UKEB’s reports on the accounting for intangibles, along with supporting resources, are available.
